About

Ms Karabo Maagi is a Masters candidate in the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Johannesburg under the supervision of Dr Fidele Tugizimana. She obtained her BSc Chemistry degree at the University of Pretoria and her BSc Honours degree in Life Sciences (Biochemistry specialization) at the University of South Africa. During her honours studies, she utilized DNA recombinant technology and developed skills in plasmid transformation and purification, fluorescence spectroscopy, circular dichroism and IMAC purification in a project titled “Over-expression and purification of Lens Epithelium growth-factor p75 (LEDGF/p75) – a novel target for anti-HIV therapy”. She developed an interest in metabolomics through the work of Dr Fidele Tugizimina. Her MSc project is focused on bioactivity -based molecular networking for the investigation of drug leads in natural product bioassay-guided fractionation.  Through this work she hopes to discover new drug leads in natural products, to hone key analytical skills including LC-MS, GC-MS and NMR spectroscopy and to become adept at using bioinformatics software for complex data analysis and interpretation.
